Christmas Stocking Redo

I published my first knitting pattern on Ravelry back in 2012, probably instead of studying for a final. I’d say it was solid C+ work, but that’s why I didn’t try charging for my patterns until this year (a full decade later).

A few people have tried to knit this C+ project, and one recently reached out to me. Needless to say, it’s time for a re-do. I’ve edited for clarity, not for style, so here it is below, still free:

Measurements (lying flat): 

Width (at the top) – 6.5”

Length – 16”

Materials:

Needles: US size 5 DPNs

Suggested Yarn: 

MC: Knit Picks Shine Worsted in Macaw, 1 skein (75 yards each)

CC1: Knit Picks Shine Worsted in Sailor, 1 skein (75 yards each)

CC2: Knit Picks Shine Worsted in Peapod, 1 skein (75 yards each)

CC3: Knit Picks Shine Worsted in French Blue, 1 skein (75 yards each)

Gauge:

13 stitches and 19 rows = 2 inches in Stockinette

Abbreviations:

DPN – double-pointed needles

MC- main color

CC- contrast color

RS – right side

K2tog- knit two together

P2tog- purl two together

Kf&b- knit front and back

SSK- slip, slip, knit

w&t – wrap and turn

K3tog – sl1, K2tog, slip slipped st over decrease

Colorwork Pattern 

Stocking

Knitting from the top down

CO 66 with MC

Row 1: Knit. 

Join in the round. Evenly distribute stitches across 3 DPNs. Place marker at end of row.

Knit in the round until top of stocking measures 2”

Fold in half with right side facing out. Pick up 70 stitches along CO edge. 

Row 1: Knit CO edge stitches together with working stitches to form the top of the stocking

Row 2: Knit in Colorwork Pattern

Continue in Colorwork Pattern until stocking measures 9.5”

Heel

Row 1: K32 in MC. Place remaining stitches on stitch holder.

Rows 2-11: K in stochinette stitch

Short row 12 (WS): P20, P2tog, w&t

Short row 13: S1, K9, SSK, w&t

Short row 14: S1 p-wise, P10, P2tog, w&t

Short row 15: S1, K11, SSK, w&t

Short row 16: S1 p-wise, P12, P2tog, w&t

Short row 17: S1, K13, SSK, w&t

Short row 18: S1 p-wise, P14, P2tog, w&t

Short row 19: S1, K15, SSK, K1

Short row 20: S1 p-wise, P16, P2tog, w&t

Short row 21: S1, K17, SSK, w&t

Short row 22: S1 p-wise, P18, P2tog

Gusset

Row 23: Continuing in Colorwork Pattern, K19, SSK, pick up and knit 9 from side of heel, pick up and knit stitches from stitch holder, pick up and knit 9 from side of heel. 

Row 24: Continuing in Colorwork Pattern, K27, K2tog, place marker, K33, place marker, SSK, K to end

Row 25: Knit in Colorwork Pattern

Row 26: Continuing in Colorwork Pattern, K to 2 stitches before first marker, K2tog, K to second marker, SSK, K to end

Repeat rows 25-26 until 54 stitches remain

Continue in Colorwork Pattern until foot measures 7“ from base of heel

Toe

Switch to CC2

Rows 1-4: Knit

Row 4: *K1, SSK, K21, K2tog, K1; place marker, repeat from *

Row 5: Knit

Row 6: *K1, SSK, K to last 3 stitches before marker, K2tog, K1; repeat from *

Repeat rows 5-6 until 26 stitches remain

Repeat row 6 until 14 stitches remain

Row 1: *K1, k3tog, k2tog, k1; repeat from *

Row 2: *K1, SSK, k1; repeat from *

Cut yarn. Thread end through remaining 6 stitches. Pull taught.

Pick up 4 stitches from left top of stocking. Knit a 3” i-cord. Secure in a loop to top of stocking. 

Weave in ends.
